Baby Showers
Wow! Has it been almost a month since my last post?!! Time flies during the holidays! Lots of pictures to share! First, two sets of baby shower cookies.
These were for a little baby who will be named Hunter. I just love the color scheme on this one!
This second set was for my neice, who is obviously having a little girl. Once again, love the color combination on this one! I think it's the fact that I love how brown pairs up so well with a multitude of colors. I honestly think that brown has become the 'new black'.
These little baby shoes were oh so fun to do! I was inspired by the wonderful design of Johnna Philips of Polka-dot Zebra. I've long admired her sweet little baby shoes, and finally had the chance to make them. Aren't they just the sweetest little cookies? High Seas Adventure, Baby Shower, 5 Years Cancer Free
A variety of cookies this week........
My kids look forward to vacation bible school every summer. So do I. It's fun, lots of activities to keep them occupied, breaks the monotony of the summer boredom that has set in at this time, and most importantly, it has a way of teaching them, on their level, about God's word. My oldest was excited because he got to be one of the staff helpers this summer. I volunteer to help out as well, and the organizers so graciously place me in the arts and crafts department! I wonder why?? That's right up my alley, and I totally LOVE it!!
Anyway, this year's theme was High Seas Expedition. The decor, lessons, and crafts were all related to ships, the sea, and adventure at sea. Of course, I volunteer to make cookies for the culmination on Friday. We usually have about 30-40 kids. This year, our numbers grew, a lot! I think the total I made was 101 cookies. Doesn't sound too bad, unless unforeseen THINGS prevent you from staying on schedule and you end up decorating 101 cookies in one afternoon/evening (Thursday - when they're needed on FRIDAY), and then have to bag each one early the next morning because your schedule is off and they need time to dry! Thank goodness for fans and heat lamps for speeding up drying time.
Regardless, the kids loved them, and I did have fun making them even though it was a rush job.
Also due for Friday, was an order for baby shower cookies. The gender of the baby is not known, so the theme was gender neutral baby blocks/animals. This is my interpretation of the shower invitation.
One of my son's classmates celebrated his birthday Saturday. Not only was he celebrating turning the age of 12, but he was also celebrating reaching the milestone of being cancer free for 5 years! Nick was diagnosed with a tumor on his kidney at the age of 7. He courageously went through surgery to remove that kidney and the chemotherapy that followed. He was going to second grade at the time. Even though he had to go through all of this, he still managed to keep up with his school work and successfully complete second grade. He is an inspiration to all who know him, and is such a sweet, loveable child. I made this bouquet for him.

It's Springtime, Baby!
But then there are still all these pesky cakes to decorate. So last weekend when I had a customer give me almost full reign on a baby shower cake I wanted to "spring" it up a bit.
I used my Silhouette digital cutter to make templates for the baby lettering, and it actually turned out quite well. I had seen a similar bow motif used on a cake a while back and decided to borrow it on this one. Some cute little flowers and butterflies. I even made a little rattle as an accent.

I got the inspiration for this cookie from a design by Mad About Cookies. I had to laugh because the icing cracked a little on the belly......guess the cookie feels the pressure of what's inside just like I did for my three little ones!!!

A friend that I have known forever recently had a baby boy. She lives a good 8 hours away from me.. So I couldn't make her any cupcakes. Instead I made her some cupcake wrappers, and some cute little sock cupcakes to go in them. (They won't melt in the post!) And if she makes some cupcakes, she can use the wrappers again!

My cousin and his wife just had another baby. Baby Bronte was born on the 4th July 2009. I made some cookies to take with me when I went to visit.

If you don't already know, I am not personally a fan of using plastic on a cake. I'm not judging mind you, I do it. I just try to do it as little as possible. It sure would make life easier and you don't break copyright, which not breaking the law is always a good thing. I'm referring to Elmo and such, not these booties of course. The first tiered cake I ever made was a cake in a similar style of this one. Boy have I learned a lot! I've also learned that people don't always want to spend the money on all gum paste items like booties. Once a customer sees the plastic on a cake, it's hard to "up sale" them to handmade. Just keep that in mind if you don't want to ever "do" plastic. I have such a hard time doing cakes like this that aren't really my "style" anymore. I really do love it when the customers say "do whatever you want". That way you can try that great cake in your head and they get an awesome cake for less than you will charge next time!
Modern Baby Shower Cake
It's been a crazy week here at the bakery, but it's been over a week since I blogged so I want to share a quick pic with all of you before I jump head first into this eyelet lace wedding cake I'm working on for this weekend.This particular cake I did for a baby shower a few weeks ago and had a fun time making it. Nothing technically hard on this one, just fondant shapes and fondant spheres on a wire (affectionately known here in the kitchen as "doomies"). The Mommy design was an edible image.
