Snow day (2011)

It started snowing again, first time in January of 2011. It is supposed to accumulate 4-8 inches in our area. It started around an hour ago and the accumulation as you can see is just over an inch. Lets see... currently we are at home with kids. so enjoying our tea and poppers for now.

Enjoying the snow day with cardammom tea and jalepeno poppers with chilli sauce.

Chattanooga Outdoor Camping Groom's Cake

A lot of you are much better at sugar figurines than I am, so when I got this order for a "less cartoony" representation of the bride and groom, I was visiting lots of places on the web and printing out tons of examples.

Our couple here loved the great outdoors and were very specific that the cake include a black bear, a tent, a canoe, and some fallen tree logs.

This was a one of those cakes where I got the hubby involved, and as usual, he came up with some neat (unusual) ways of doing things.  He made the rocks by tearing some hunks off some modeling chocolate that was still hard and had not yet been kneaded smooth.  I was very surprised at how "rock-like" the crumbly modeling chocolate looked.  He also made the hollow logs.  He started with a piece of rolled brown modeling chocolate.  He made some "bark" lines and then flipped it over.  He then took a log of modeling chocolate (think big Tootsie Roll) and then rolled the thin bark piece around it, letting the thin bark hang over the tootsie log and ripped the ends to make it look jagged and natural.  Again, I was impressed by my little hubby.  I guess watching all those cake shows and keeping me company in the kitchen really paid off!!

Have a great week!

Jammi

As dussehra is coming up, it reminded me of the jammi aakulu. On Dussehra day, we generally give some akshintalu along with some jammi leaves to elder's and take their blessings. I do not know the reason behind it but wanted to share it with all of you. Jammi chettu in english is called "Mimosa". I got small seedling from one of my colleague. I was excited to find that it is Jammi chettu.

Another chamanthi chettu beside jammi chettu at my home.

Long Sorakaya's from my Mama's home

This is the picture of sorakaya from my mama's home. which is too tall just like him.

Tried to capture the long sorakaya (bottle gourd) in a single picture .... but could not.... so took another picture.

The following picture is from my aunt's home where she broke the sorakaya into two pieces. Laid them attached, to show the length of the sorakaya.

I also took the next picture because I felt they just looked like twins :) .

First rays of sun after snow day

I wanted to capture the first rays of the sun on the first snow of the winter 2009. However I could not get a good shot but here is one which pictures my backyard. You can see that our whole backyard had a layer of snow on it, which then was melted mostly on the same day because of the sun. :) I like it.

Gumpaste Iris Wedding Cake

A few months back, I met with a bride that wanted a very natural cake with ferns, fiddle heads, and irises. I had never made gum paste irises, so I started looking online. All of the so-called "irises" really looked nothing like the irises my bride wanted. I decided that my only recourse was to make my own. I got out my Nicholas Lodge DVD and started making notes. Several days later I had a bunch of the little suckers made up. I was pleased with the results!

We delivered this little beauty to the Black Bear Cove Resort in Benton, TN. The setting was very rustic and natural and the cake really fit in with the decor.
