Pirate Ship Birthday Cake

Another Pirate Ship Cake!

This one doesn't look quite so pirate-like, or at least didn't until I added the flags and sails. I don't like to make any two cakes alike, so there ya go! lol

I found the images for the sail and flag through a Google Image search. The back section of this ship is doweled, just to keep it from cracking and falling apart! I learned to do this the hard way... my little cake decorator's confession.

The cake board is heavy foam core. I don't use cardboard cake boards as they're too soft and they flex. One of my favorite ways to make a cake look unique is to get creative with the board itself. This one was decorated to look like ocean waves. Now... I don't know how successful I was at it, but I took a scrap from one of those inexpensive vinyl table covers (the ones you can buy for $1) and crumpled it under clear contact paper. I sorta like the effect!
