Toy Story Birthday Cake

One way to make a character cake is to find coloring book images you like, place them in a clear ziplock bag and layer fondant shapes over the image. Use vanilla extract and a small paint brush to connect the pieces, then carefully lift the image with a spatula and place on a freshly buttercreamed cake. Take it slow though... or you'll have fondant pieces everywhere!

This was my technique for this Toy Story birthday cake. I then used fondant writers to finish the eyes and display the birthday greeting.

This cake took me about 3 hours to make... including kitchen clean-up (but not counting baking time).

BumbleBee Transformer Cake

This is a my lame attempt to give my 9 year old a BumbleBee birthday cake. It's head is a helmet, so only the shoulders are cake. Making BumbleBee isn't all that easy to do, especially given every picture I pulled up of him online looked so different from the one before. I decided getting the color right was what I'd concentrate on and just go with a simple design.

This cake was made using a total of 3 sheet cakes (12"x18" pan). So... it's a lot of cake! I didn't smooth the frosting as I decided it added to the rough look of BumbleBee. By the way, I don't think I'm spelling his name right, so might be editing this post later! lol

If I had it to do again, I'd add a license plate to the front. Would have been cool, but I ran out of time!

Simple Spiderman Cupcakes

It's been a long while since I posted a new cake here, and yet this isn't anything overly special! lol These cupcakes are very easy for a novice to copy, so thought for that reason alone, I'd post the photo. Maybe you're looking for a simple solution for your son's school party, or you wanted an alternative to plastic cupcake pics?

I used Wilton tip #32 to cover these cupcakes, then tip #3 to draw the web. Very easy to do and your children will love it!

First Birthday Cake

I'm not loving the way this cake photographed.... looks so cool sitting on my counter, yet so mediocre in these snapshots.

I used Wilton's Bright Shimmer Dust to give it a colorful glittering effect, which you can't fully appreciate in the photos.

The other thing that bugs me is that I didn't use a larger board for this cake! It's barely hanging on! lol

Cars Movie... Mack Cake

This was the first time I'd ever used pearl dust on fondant... or at least the first time I'd used it correctly. It really gives the metal portions of this truck a lot of depth and I'm so excited to know that I can use pearl dust without vodka! lol For some reason, I didn't realize you could use plain ol' vanilla extract!

Anyhoo... so loving the sheen!

I don't speak Spanish by the way... I made this for a good friend's son, so if you leave me a comment in Spanish and I don't respond, you'll know why!

This one was made back in September for a friend's son. I later realized I left off some important features! oops! lol

Little Mermaid Birthday Cake

I made this shaped cake back in September for my 5 year old and just now got around to posting it! lol Guess you could say it's not my favorite, but she sure loved it.

The shells and coral are fondant made, the sand is crushed vanilla wafer cookies.

Another Nemo Cake

Another Nemo cake. Very similar to the one I made previously, but much smaller. ; )

The fish are all toys, the coral and starfish are gumpaste. Everything else is buttercream!

Curious George Luau

When all else fails use tissue paper! My gumpaste made banana tree leaves fell apart while trying to assemble my tree, so went with tissue!
George is a store bought toy, lei is store bought too... everything else other than tree leaves is edible.
