Acland Street: A Paradise for Cake Lovers

Imagine it: an entire street lined with pastry shops. Window filled with cakes of every kind and covered in the prints of passerbys who pressed themselves against the glass for a closer look.

The Acland Street cake shop windows are a kaleidoscope of cream, coconut and chocolate: living, breathing gingerbread houses where you can eat the roof or the bell that ping-pings as you push the door. A touch of the Willy Wonka's. Kids press their hands to the windows, running their fingers through every custard tart in their minds. Every time the door opens a rush of hot buttered air escapes, sending the crowd into a gush of ecstatic oohs and ahhs. Parents video the cakes, sensing they are witnessing the incredible. Unfeasible.

Have you ever noticed that the cakes never run out? There is always cherry strudel, even when cherries are out of season. Magical. Mythological. If Adam met Eve on Acland Street it would have been a Vienna Mud Cake, not an apple.
