I cannot remember when I started making my own rice dumplings. I wanted to make my own because they are always sold at higher prices before and during the Dragon Boat Festival or Double Fifth Day. Sometimes they can cost twice as much as what it is priced on normal days. This year the festival falls on 8 June which is a Sunday.I learned how to do the wrapping from my grandmother. I grew up eating my aunt's "Bak Chang" (rice dumplings in Hokkien) and "Nonya Chang" (Nonya's version) and I was determined to learn how to do my own dumplings just like hers, even though she still gives to us what she made every year. I have brought mine to my colleagues for the past few years and they liked them very much. This year I've only made Nonya dumplings as I'm too lazy to make both types myself, knowing that I still get to eat them anyway when my aunt invites. :P
