The Making of a Beach Party Cake

Well, it's actually for a women's Spring brunch, but you get the idea! Here's what I spent the evening creating... tomorrow I'll be shaping a few more pieces, the topping off my trees, baking and frosting my cake and by Saturday morning should have the finished product for all to admire.
I'm having a lot more fun with this cake than I have most. I think that could be because it's not for any one individual and in fact is really just a centerpiece for a table. If they eat it fine, if not, that fine too! I'm just enjoying playing in fondant, sort of like a good does playdoh. Getting my hands messy is as much fun now as it was when I was six.

If you're wondering what the white powder is, that's my cornstarch spill. My daughter found it quite amusing. I use the corn starch to keep the fondant from sticking. When I want it to stick I dab it with water via my handy paint brush.

The trees are drying in a Coke class, which works very well. They're formed on some sort of tubing I've had so long I can't recall what it was designed for, but do know it's a Wilton product.
